Fort Worth Nature Center & Refuge

This hidden gem located just 20 minutes from downtown Fort Worth, Texas, offers visitors a chance to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and immerse themselves in nature.

First, let's talk about the logistics of planning a paddling trip at the Fort Worth Nature Center & Refuge. The refuge is open from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM daily and offers several paddling options, including canoes, kayaks, and stand-up paddleboards (SUPs).

Before heading out on the water, visitors must check-in at the Nature Center and sign a liability waiver. The Nature Center also provides paddlers with a map of the refuge, highlighting the designated paddling areas, rules and regulations, and safety tips.

Now, onto the fun part – the paddling experience itself.

We set off on the West Fork Trinity River, which flows through the refuge. The river is calm and serene, with little to no motorized boat traffic, making it the perfect spot for a relaxing paddle. As we glided through the water, we were surrounded by stunning natural scenery. The refuge is home to a variety of wildlife, including beavers, otters, and several species of birds, which we were lucky enough to spot along the way.

One highlight of our paddling trip was paddling into Greer Island, which is accessible only by water. The island is a popular spot for picnicking and birdwatching, and it provided us with a chance to stretch our legs and explore a bit.

It's worth noting that the Fort Worth Nature Center & Refuge is a conservation area, and visitors must abide by specific rules and regulations to protect the ecosystem. Some of the rules include not disturbing wildlife, not littering, and staying in designated paddling areas. Visitors must also respect the quiet zone, which applies to the portion of the river closest to the Nature Center and is strictly enforced.

Overall, our paddling experience at the Fort Worth Nature Center & Refuge was a real highlight. The refuge offers visitors a chance to connect with nature, immerse themselves in a peaceful environment, and escape the hustle and bustle of the city. If you're looking for a unique and memorable paddling experience in Fort Worth, I highly recommend a visit to the Fort Worth Nature Center & Refuge.
